Following his appearance as a remix artist on Mike Drones & Loëpa’s ‘Still Bad - EP’ (2019), Rednote returns to Deep Cover with his first full-length project in several years. ’MIZU - EP’ is a haunting trifecta of tracks pairing rich, organic instrumentation with a heavy, soundsystem-ready low-end, completed by an apocalyptic, grindhouse remix courtesy of enigmatic Dubstep/Desert Rock misfit Hannibal Rex.
Title-track ‘Mizu’ establishes meditative, textured soundscapes that give way to a rolling, seismic bass groove, roaring synth swells and muscular percussion. Punctuated with a breathy, ethereal woodwind lead, the track runs ritualistically - evoking pathways to darker realms. ‘Europa’ explores wider expanses; with ricocheting, birdcall sirens firing across an undulating backdrop of 808s and cavernous choral samples. Completing the triptych is ‘Hungry Ghosts’ - a triumphant, melodic fever-dream carried by singalong mallet percussion and warm, bitcrushed chords. Kikuji Records representer Hannibal Rex takes the reins on track #4, delivering a crushing, claustrophobic reprise of ‘Hungry Ghosts’, armed with overdriven guitars, cinematic strings and hyperventilating sonics reminiscent of rushing, pressurised air.
Paired with gorgeous cover art by Marina Simmons, ‘Mizu’ is a nocturnal fantasia that enchants in headphones but yearns for the soundsystem - a project sure to cement Rednote amongst the most exciting upcoming producers in the dubstep community.
